Youngfield Bridge over Clear Creek Rehabilitation

The city owns and maintains 11 bridges. These are inspected every three years by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) which provides a report showing deficiencies and maintenance needs. This bridge was last rated in 2021 and showed the need to address deterioration of the bridge joints and one of the pier caps.

This project will add expansion devices to the existing bridge to increase durability. Currently, there are no expansion devices, so the asphalt at the beginning and end of the bridge is cracking, allowing water to seep through to the abutment. To prevent this, approach slabs with sleeper slabs are being constructed to accommodate expansion devices. New pedestrian ramps and fencing will also be installed to improve safety for pedestrians.

  • Contractor: TechCon Infrastructure
  • Estimated Construction Cost: $550,000
  • Estimated Construction Completion: December 2023

Pedestrian Improvements _ 38th Avenue at Reed Street

The city has received requests to install a crosswalk at this location to accommodate school children as well as access to local businesses. The sidewalk at this location is raised above the street to accommodate a sub-surface water main and therefore doesn’t meet accessibility standards.

The project will reconstruct the sidewalk, add a handrail, and install pedestrian ramps to meet accessibility standards. Pedestrian-activated flashing beacons will also be installed. The city was awarded a Revitalizing Main Streets grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in the amount of $70,000 towards this effort.

  • Contractor: Majestic Concrete
  • Estimated Construction Cost: $85,000
  • Estimated Construction Completion: December 2023

Emergency Storm Sewer Repair Replacement

The storm sewer in the following locations has partially collapsed and is causing the street above it to fail. This project will replace pipe in the following locations:

  • 37th Avenue and Independence Avenue – approximately 300 feet to the north and 150 feet to the south of the intersection
  • 39th Avenue and Hoyt Ct – approximately 300 feet from the intersection, north to the end of the cul-de-sac.

Construction will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays. During these times, parking on the street will not be allowed. Access for local traffic, including garbage and delivery trucks, will be maintained but there may be delays, at times. After 5 p.m., in most areas, parking will be allowed on the street.

The entire project is expected to take about 5-6 weeks to complete. All work is weather dependent.

During construction, please assist the crew and your neighbors by following these safety rules:

  • Drive slowly and carefully through all construction zones; do not drive through areas where construction is occurring, even after work has stopped for the night.
  • Obey all traffic and parking signs and follow the direction of flaggers.
  • Always keep children and pets away from the construction areas.
  • Remove garbage & recycling cans as soon as they are emptied.

Please drive slowly and carefully through the construction areas and obey all flaggers and traffic signs.

Annual Slurry Seal Pavement Project

Project Update: The slurry seal work is scheduled to start on 10/18/2023.  It is estimated it will take the contractor 5 working days to complete the work areas.

Slurry Seal Project Overview:

A slurry seal is the application of a mixture of water, asphalt emulsion, aggregate (very small, crushed rock), and additives to an existing asphalt pavement. This combined mixture of the emulsion and aggregates represents “slurry.” The placement of this mixture on existing pavement is the “seal” as it is intended to seal the pavement surface. Slurry seal is applied to help preserve and protect the underlying pavement structure and provide a new driving surface. Slurry seal applications serve to seal the cracks, restore lost flexibility to the pavement surface, and help preserve the underlying pavement structure.

During the process, the slurry mixture flows out of the rear of the truck and onto the pavement within the confines of a box attached to the rear of the truck. The box serves to distribute the slurry mixture evenly over the pavement. The process on any given street takes about 6-8 hours before the road can be re-opened to traffic.

Approximately 6.5 miles of streets will be treated through this project.

Adjacent property owners will receive a written notice from the city providing more specific information on timing and safety procedures during construction.

Annual Mill and Overlay Pavement Project

A mill and overlay is a process used in road maintenance to rehabilitate an existing asphalt pavement surface by removing the top layer of asphalt (known as the “mill”) and then replacing it with a new layer of asphalt (known as the “overlay”). The milling process involves the use of a large machine that grinds off the existing surface layer of the pavement to a specific depth, typically 1.5 – 3 inches. The milling machine removes the old asphalt and any damaged or deteriorated sections of the underlying pavement.

After the milling is completed, the surface is cleaned and inspected for any additional repairs that may be necessary. Once the surface is deemed ready, a new layer of asphalt is applied, which typically ranges in thickness from 1.5 to 2 inches. The new layer of asphalt is then compacted using heavy equipment to create a smooth, even surface.

Mill and overlay is a cost-effective method for extending the life of an existing asphalt pavement surface, particularly when the underlying pavement is still in good condition, but the surface layer has become worn, cracked, or damaged.

Approximately 2.8 miles of streets will be treated through this project.

Adjacent property owners will receive a written notice from the city providing more specific information on timing and safety procedures during construction.
