Exotic Animals
Did you know?
In the City of Wheat Ridge it is unlawful for any person to own, possess, harbor, sell or traffic exotic or wild animals, whether it is native to this state or not. (Section 4-14 Exotic or Wild Animals)
What is an Exotic Animal?
Exotic animals include a variety of species such as reptiles (alligators), marsupials, non-human primates (monkeys) and wild-feline animals and potbellied pigs. Potbellied pig owners may be granted an exception by the Animal Welfare and Control Commission. (see below exceptions)
Exceptions:
The Animal Welfare and Control Commission (AWCC) may grant exceptions to Section 4-14, Prohibited Animals, for successive periods of time not to exceed twelve months. Exceptions for potbellied pigs may be granted by the AWCC. Contact Animal Control to inquire about an exception.
What is a Wild Animal?
Wildlife animals include many types of animals such as the red fox, skunks, coyotes and any animal that is not a domestic animal.
While many of these animals are very cute and cuddly as babies; they soon grow up to be unmanageable and are not safe to keep as family pets! Community Service Animal Control Officers would like to remind folks to never to pick up or handle an exotic or wild animal.
